vintage-1950s-fischer-dubrovnik-painted-chess-set-chess-pieces-only
Vintage 1950s Fischer Dubrovnik Painted Chess Set – Chess Pieces Only, 3.8-Inch King

This painted set reproduces the Dubrovnik design of the 1950s and 1960s, the pattern associated with Bobby Fischer, who praised it as a joy to play with and to hold. Its fat, chunky bases and solid, well-proportioned forms, finished here in classic black and white paint, give it a distinctive mid-century character. Original sets are extremely hard to find, so this reproduction is an accessible way for players and collectors to enjoy the design; the rook has been revised to a straight body and shank.

What's Included

34 Dubrovnik-style chess pieces in black and white painted boxwood

Chess pieces only; no board or storage box

Chess Pieces

Handcrafted by skilled artisans, the pieces carry increased ballast at the base for a stable, satisfying feel.

King: 3.8 in (97 mm) tall, 1.7 in (44 mm) base

Queen: 3.4 in (85 mm) tall, 1.7 in (42 mm) base

Bishop: 3.0 in (75 mm) tall, 1.5 in (39 mm) base

Knight: 2.8 in (70 mm) tall, 1.5 in (39 mm) base

Rook: 2.2 in (56 mm) tall, 1.5 in (39 mm) base

Pawn: 1.9 in (49 mm) tall, 1.3 in (33 mm) base

Material: painted boxwood, black (dark) and white (light)

Weighting: increased ballast at the base

Recommended square size: 2.16 in to 2.36 in (55 mm to 60 mm)

Total weight of pieces: 3.4 lb (1,520 g)

Number of pieces: 34

Care

Wipe the painted pieces with a dry, soft cloth and avoid solvents or water.
